The university is looking for volunteers to help with research into active health.

Many people wear fitness trackers these days. But do these devices actually help and encourage us to get fitter?

The active health team, part of the Institute of Health Research and Innovation at the University of the Highlands and Islands is conducting a study into how people interact with and use wearable fitness technology, such as a Fitbit, and smartphone applications. The work will also look at how people adhere to online exercise classes

The team is looking for volunteers, between the ages of 50 and 70 to take part in a 6 week study.

Volunteers will be divided into two groups. Participants in one group will be asked to attend two sessions each week of online home-based exercise provided by High Life Highland. The other group will be a control group where participants continue with their usual levels of physical activity. All participants will be issued with a Fitbit and will need to complete a short testing session at the beginning and end of the six week period.

The active health team is looking for

  • Males and females
  • 50-70 years old
  • People currently conducting low to moderate levels of physical activity
  • People with no contraindications to exercise

More information about the study and how you can take part can be found here or by contacting active.health@uhi.ac.uk
